Baker County is named for Edward Dickinson Baker, the first member of the United States Senate representing the state of Oregon after achieving statehood on February 14, 1859. Baker, a close personal friend of Abraham Lincoln, left his seat in the Senate to organize and command the 71st Pennsylvania Regiment during the Civil War, holding the rank of colonel. Baker was killed in combat in Ball’s Bluff, Virginia on October 21, 1861.
